This story is so long overdue! I forgot to share with you all how my blog has helped with my career. Allow me to explain.
When I first had the idea to relocate to New York City I knew it was going to be extremely competitive in both Marketing and Fashion industries. Of course, I had some internships and a previous career as a Financial Analyst. But I needed something to showcase my creative side which led me to create ‘AmbraSimone.com’.
Believe it or not, since launching my blog, it has been the most impressive thing on my resume. Having my own blog has served as a digital introduction to me, my work and has opened the door for numerous opportunities. If you are interested in a career in Marketing, Media, or even Public Relations keep reading to see how a blog can get your foot in the door!
Defining a personal brand
Personal branding is your online and offline reputation. It is what people immediately think when someone hears your name. The goal is to stand out on paper by showcasing who you are. By having a blog, employers can clearly see your savvy online marketing skills, determination, and ambition. Especially if you work in a field where branding is important (i.e. Marketing, Media, or Public Relations). The ability to show you understand how the web, blogging, and social media all come together to drive business results gives you a leg up on other candidates.
Learning technical skills
Managing a blog is the same as managing a website for a potential employer. It requires a few technical skills that can transfer over to your resume. You use Image Editing, Simple HTML coding, Email Newsletters, Social Media, and Web Analytics. In interviews I found myself referring back to my blog maintenance more than my work experience. By keeping up with your basic technical skills and staying knowledgeable about trends, you will be considered an asset to a company.
Learning the industry
Research and analyzing are key skills to making it in any industry. You not only have to love it but be obsessed with it! Through my blog, I’ve stayed on top of the latest in fashion and beauty. Before I write a blog post I research trends, reviews, and what’s new on the market. This brings great talking points in interviews. Hiring professionals want to see and hear your passion.
I like to think of my blog as a digital cover letter. Well not exactly, but it does serve as a competitive tool accompanied by my resume. When I got my first internship on the spot at Marie Claire, my boss at the time later told me that my blog was the reason she decided to hire me, despite having no experience in fashion. Writing on a blog showcases your skills to potential employers before you even step foot in an interview.
So what are you waiting for? It’s never too late to start a blog. Don’t be afraid…get started now to help land your dream job!
