I’m so excited that fashion week is finally here! This season I’ll be attending a few shows and of course capturing every moment to share. Let’s begin with Day 1 at Harlem’s Fashion Row.
HFR is an Art’s and Entertainment organization founded by Brandice Daniel in 2007 with a clear mission to provide a platform for designers, stylists, creative directors and makeup artists of color working in the fashion industry. HFR’s style awards and Spring 2017 runway show at Pier 59 was held on Thursday night.
I decided to keep it casual because I was rushing home from work. By the way, my week is going to be crazy jamming in NYFW events, a 9-5, and classes but we’ll make it work!
This black lace top I’m wearing is actually 2 years old from Rodéo Boutique in Ruston, LA. I decided to pull it out since lace tops are all the craze lately. One reason why I never get rid of some pieces, you never know when it’s going to be ‘on trend’ again.
The style awards are held first for Daniel to honor ‘fashion industry power players’, which was actually one of my favorite parts of this event. It sets the tone to make you feel empowered and inspired. The honorees were Elaine Welteroth for Editor of the Year, Kyle Hagler for Trailblazer, Eric Aric Archibald for Stylist of the year, and Swizz Beatz for Icon 360.
Following the awards, four designers sent their collections down the runway.
Lois London by Radhika Perera-Hernandez
Kahindo by Kahindo Mateene
Terese Sydonna by Terese Brown
JRU by Jakai Franks
I’m so grateful I was able to be apart of this event. The best part was being surrounded by people of color with a common goal to make an impact in the fashion industry. Seeing designers, editors, and stylist who look like me makes my dream tangible. Thank you, Brandice Daniel, for the 9 years invested in this organization. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for next season!
